of conscousness repost from livejournal

Of Consciousness, her awful Mate. The Soul cannot be rid -- as easy the secreting her behind the Eyes of God. Emily Dickenson

Originating in Plato's Symposium, the idea of soul mates is derived from the idea that upon creation, human beings had four arms, four legs, two heads, etc. They were then split in half to have two arms, two legs, one head. each person was half of one soul, one male, one female. thus springs the idea that there is only one soul mate per person. according to wikipedia, the idea of the scientific soul mate is that this is the preson wtih wich you are the most happy. i wonder if one were to expand this a little further and break it down symantically, because one is the most happy with this person, if it does not therefore connotate that an individual may have more than one soul mate, with most being singular from plural. Kind of like in ever after with drew berrymore where whatchamacallit prince is asking if your real soul mate gets struckby lightening if that has anything to do with having more than one. it makes me wonder if those of us that are bisexual have one soul mate for each gender. imagine how complicated it would be to have two soul mates and two separate but equally passionate relationships.
